WHAT IS IN THE MEDICINE?
Orlistat (RedoXfat Plus 60) helps in the management of obesity together with diet modifications and works by inhibiting the pancreatic lipase, the enzyme that breaks down fat in small intestine. Without this enzyme fat in the diet is excreted undigested and therefore not absorbed by the body. Orlistat is minimally absorbed after oral administration.
WHAT IS THIS MEDICINE USED FOR?
Orlistat (RedoXfat Plus 60) is used for the management of obesity together with diet modifications in patients with Body Mass Index (BMI) of 28 kg/ m2 or greater. It may also be used in over-weight patient with a BMI of 27 kg/m2 or more if there are associated risk factors.
HOW MUCH AND HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU USE THIS MEDICINE?
Take 1 capsule or 60 mg three times a day for patients with Body Mass Index (BMI) of greater than or equal to 28 kg/ m2 irrespective of any risk factors.
WHEN SHOULD YOU NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE?
Orlistat (RedoXfat Plus 60) should not be given to patients with chronic malabsorption syndrome or cholestasis and if undesirable interaction/s with other drug ingredients is/are possible. Pregnancy and lactation. Ask your doctor before use if necessary.
CARE THAT SHOULD BE TAKEN WHEN TAKING THIS MEDICINE?
Ask your doctor before taking this product. This should be given with caution to patients with a history of hyperoxaluria orcalcium oxalate nephrolithiasis. Adjustments to dosage of hypoglycemics may be necessary in patients with type II diabetesbecause of improved metabolic control after weight loss in these patients. Supplements of fat-soluble vitamins may benecessary during long-term therapy but they should be taken at least 2 hours before or after an orlistat dose or at bedtime.
Hormonal contraceptive failure may also occur and if you are PREGNANT OR BREASTFEEDING ask a doctor before use.
WHAT OTHER MEDICINE OR FOOD SHOULD BE AVOIDED WHILE TAKING THIS MEDICINE?
Below are the following drug interactions that must be avoided during Orlistat medications:
• Orlistat may reduce the absorption of iodine salts and/or levothyroxine, fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E and K) andbeta carotene.
• Orlistat may also decrease the plasma levels of ciclosporin and amiodarone.
• Orlistat may decrease the effectiveness of antiepileptic drugs (e.g. valproate, lamotrigine), antiretrovirals, antidepressants,antipsychotics (including lithium).
• Orlistat is found to have an additive effect on glycemic control with antidiabetic drugs.
• Orlistat may also cause hormonal contraceptive failure and enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin.
Always tell your doctor about the other medicine/s you are taking.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU MISS A DOSE?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for your next dose skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose at the same time.
HOW SHOULD YOU KEEP THIS MEDICINE?
Store at temperatures not exceeding 30°C.
